Careen Joseph

Madam Chair

I am Careen Joseph, the Vice President (Safeguarding Adults and Children) of Cognition HR and Finance Solutions Ltd. I specialise in setting up and providing strategic leadership in complex safeguarding HR projects for public, private and voluntary organisations. In 2017 my life changed, and I suffered from economic and post-separation abuse. Instead of seeing myself as a victim, I was determined to become a survivor. I read Ephesians 6, “The Armor of God”. God told me,” Careen, Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”.

This inspired me to design a new concept within my field called Global Radical HR. Global Radical HR is a fusion of spiritual law, man-made law, psychology, Social Policy and continuous personal and professional development via operating with the 3G and 3P Cognitive Mindset within businesses. I look at problems from a Clinical, Criminal and Spiritual perspective to provide sound commercial solutions for public, private, and voluntary safeguarding projects. Using the 3G and 3P mindset means I seek solutions “Globally”, act with ‘Good integrity”, and display true “Grit” to manage HR safeguarding projects.

When Becky shared her vision with me while volunteering for Press Red, we soon realised we were both on the same mission and agreed to provide commercial strategic leadership for Beauty for Ashes to bring Becky’s vision to reality. The first step to freedom is the hardest to take, but you must never look back once you are ready to accept your calling.

Ruth Akinradewo

Trustee

Ruth has been on the board of trustees for Beauty for Ashes Refuges since its inception in 2020. Ruth connected with Becky, Beauty for Ashes’ CEO, and Careen, the Madam Chair, through their voluntary work as ambassadors for the Christian charity Press Red, which seeks to educate, equip and empower people to tackle issues of gender-based violence.

Ruth brings a fervent desire to see all human beings afforded the dignity and value they deserve as people made in the image of God. She currently works for a national Christian children’s charity and has extensive experience in the voluntary sector, including volunteering in a women’s refuge for domestic abuse survivors.

Ruth is a writer with several years of experience in journalism and creative writing. She is a contributing writer to the devotional Day by Day with God; her last published Bible study focused on the character of Esther, exploring, amongst other themes, the abuse that Esther was subjected to before saving her people. Ruth brings attention to detail and a passion for impactfully communicating the gravity of domestic abuse to Beauty for Ashes. When she’s not telling all her friends about social injustice and how they can help eradicate it, you can find her worshipping in song, writing, or laughing – very loudly.

Edith Smith

Trustee

Edith Smith qualified as a Midwife and currently works in the health sector. She has specialised in teenage parent support work and behaviour therapy for children and parents and has managed several community projects for children and families. She has held strategic leadership positions for local councils in promoting the agenda to end violence against women and girls. Edith is involved in Christian Outreach work for disadvantaged people in her spare time. Edith’s passion is to see women overcome the damaging effects of violence, abuse and discrimination and be empowered to live stable and fulfilled lives.
